Black Men’s Mental Health & Hip-Hop
Dr. Obari Cartman: Join us for an honest conversation about the mental health challenges and opportunities for growth with Black men. We will use music, lyrics, and videos to guide us through a discussion that helps us understand the identity, motivation, and emotional world of Black men. This workshop is solution focused. Everyone will leave better equipped to support Black men on their journey to maintain wellness, cultivate healthy relationships, and thrive in a world of obstacles designed just for them.
Dr. Cartman is a father, son, brother, uncle, thinker, writer, therapist, photographer, drummer, and grassroots mental health advocate. He is a Chicago native, where his cultural and educational foundations were cultivated by several African-centered institutions. He received his undergraduate degree from Hampton University and a Ph.D. in clinical & community psychology from Georgia State University. His recent work includes being a trauma-focused clinician, restorative justice coach, and program evaluator with H.E.LP., LLC (Healing Empowering and Learning Professions). Dr. Cartman has served as a professor of psychology at Georgia State University and the Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies at Northeastern University. Dr. Cartman recently created a male rite of passage curriculum called MANifest, which is being implemented in juvenile detention centers, schools, and private community settings.
Dr. Cartman is the former program director for Real Men Charities, Inc., where for 3 years, he facilitated weekly men’s wellness and African drumming circles and was the associate editor of the South Side Drive magazine. Dr. Cartman is the current President of the Chicago Association of Black Psychologists and curator of a directory of Black mental health providers. As a consultant, Dr. Cartman facilitates trainings for adults and workshops with youth about maintaining good mental health, critical analysis of hip-hop and media, racial and cultural identity, developing authentic manhood, and healthy relationships.

Sound Bath Meditation
LovEnergy Holistic Wellness, LLC: Meet Kim, a heart centered holistic healing coach who has been a dedicated public school educator over 24 years. Kim has always had a fascination with the mind-body-spirit connection, and it was this curiosity along with life experiences that led her to pursue a career in healing. After completing her formal training in Reiki and Sound Healing Therapy, Kim went on to establish her own practice, LovEnergy Holistic Wellness, LLC, where she has been helping clients achieve healing and well-being ever since.
In her experience, Kim recognizes many ailments/dis-ease are rooted in chronic stress, trauma, poor diet, environmental toxins, disconnection from one’s own divinity, etc. These manifest into physical, mental and spiritual conditions that can be alleviated by tapping into the body’s energy centers.
Kim has been formally practicing Usui and Shamanic Reiki since 2019 and has a deep understanding of the body’s energy system. She uses this knowledge to channel healing energy, helping to relieve pain, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. In addition to Reiki, Kim is also a certified Sound Healing Therapist and uses a variety of instruments such as the gong, drums, tuning forks, and crystal bowls to create a relaxing and cleansing healing experience for her clients.
